Our Hi-Five Kids Pack Program provides nutritious meals to needy children who do not have access to school cafeterias during the weekend. We started the Hi-Five program when educators came to us looking for a solution to providing weekend food for the neediest of their students. Students were coming to school sick and unable to learn because they had not eaten since their school lunch the previous Friday.
Second Harvest Food Bank partners with elementary schools that have a significant percentage of student participation in free and reduced lunch programs. Last year, 26,670 weekend food packs were provided to needy children at elementary schools. The food packs contain a variety of kid-friendly items such as cereal, shelf-stable milk and juice, fruit cups and more. These food packs of shelf stable food are all assembled at our facility by our dedicated volunteers.
Since 2006, more than 314,700 packs have been distributed – the equivalent of 944,244 meals. The Hi-Five Kids Pack Program has been made possible by funding from Darden Restaurants, Winter Park Health Foundation, The Orlando Magic, Walmart and Kohl’s Department Stores, as well as many other generous partners.
