Where Our Food Comes From

America’s abundant food resources are one of many things that make it a strong nation.  There has never been a shortage of food in America, even as tens of millions of our neighbors struggle to afford enough for themselves and their families.  The core mission of our food bank remains to capture as much of the ‘extra’ food in our society as possible, and make it available for the clients of our partner feeding programs.  With the support and generosity of food manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, growers, and others in the community, Second Harvest Food Bank was able to distribute nearly 56 milion meals for struggling citizens last year alone.

Much of this food was gathered from local sources, while a significant portion came to us from outside Central Florida through the incredible work of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network.  In addition to the food industry, our Food Bank also distributes food commodities made available through the US Government’s TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) program, and food collected through community food drives.  Read below to learn about the different sources that Second Harvest relies on for getting food out into our community. Where our food comes from

Grocery Alliance

This important food recovery program collects wholesome, unsold food from more than 450 participating retail store locations throughout Central Florida. The Grocery Alliance product mix – which includes meat, produce, dairy, bakery and dry goods – offers a wide range of nutritious and sought-after foods. In 2015/2016, the program provided over 20 million meals.

TEFAP

The Florida Department of Agriculture awarded distribution contracts for Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia, Osceola, and Marion counties to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for its distribution program of government food commodities. In 2015/2016, 8 million meals were provided into our community. * USDA-HHS Non-Discrimination Statement click here:

Produce Program

With growing awareness of the link between nutrition and health, Second Harvest has committed to increasing the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables available to clients year-round. Our Produce Program works with the agriculture and produce industry, as well as organizations such as the Society of St. Andrew and the Florida Association of Food Banks. In 2015/2016, this program provided over 15 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to our Central Florida community. Click here, if you are interested in donating produce.

Second Helpings

This prepared-food rescue program collects and delivers donations from local restaurants, hotels and resorts. The program provided 1.3 million meals to partner feeding programs that provide on-site meals for clients.

Community Food Drives

An amazing 857,000 meals were provided in fiscal 2015/2016 through Community Food Drives.

Other Food Industry Partners

In addition to our programs, Second Harvest collected more than 7 million pounds of donated food and non-food products to Central Florida, thanks to the help of more than 1,000 local and national food companies. The food donors who partner with Second Harvest are vital to our hunger relief efforts. Click here to learn more about this partnership and how your company can get involved.
